The Instrumented Oilfield concept integrates surface
and
borehole measurement systems with smart well completions to optimize
and control reservoir performance on a real-time basis. Currently, technology
helps direct decisions about fields in "midlife crisis." In
the future, technology will extend to the optimization of early field
development
and facilities plans.
The success of the Instrumented Oilfield
depends on efficient data gathering, transfer,
and management. Return on investment can
be enhanced with comprehensive planning of
the technology architecture.
For example, operational data must first be gathered from multiple sources.
These include engineering data, seismic, production, and well log. Next,
the data must be extracted, cleaned, transformed, and loaded into data
stores or warehouses. Then the information must be interpreted, analyzed,
and communicated.
Based on the data, decisions are made. Then those decisions must be
implemented.
The result is a continuous and multi-dimensional flow of information.
Such a technology solution can constantly add value.
